FIVE LETTER WORDS

by Barbara Vink

When pawing through
the remnants of my life
I find you, taking up
more space than I
should have allowed.
I have bitten into bitterness
and cannot forget the taste,
dining alone now
sleeping alone, feeling
no warm skin, hearing
no terms of endearment.
My new reality.
It occurs to me
that I might never
feel you again.
Such a long word – never.
Like death.
Endless.

Barbara Vink is retired, still tired, struggling to answer the question, Who am I now?
